As a millennial diver myself, I can confidently say that diving has brought me closer to different cultures and has given me a unique perspective on life. Let me take you on a journey around the world to explore the cultural significance of diving!

The Philippines

First up, the Philippines! Did you know that diving is a huge part of their national identity? It’s a way for Filipinos to show off their amazing marine biodiversity and it’s also a source of income for many locals. But the cultural significance of diving goes beyond that. In the Philippines, they believe that the ocean is a source of life and that it needs to be respected and protected. As divers, we have a responsibility to do our part in preserving their beautiful ocean.

Hawaii

Next stop, Hawaii! Diving has always been an important part of Hawaiian culture. In fact, the ancient Hawaiians believed that the ocean was their source of power and that they were descended from the sea. They also believed in the concept of “aloha”, which means love, compassion, and respect for all living things. As divers, we can learn a lot from the Hawaiian culture and embody the spirit of aloha.

Thailand

Now let’s head over to Thailand! Diving is a major attraction for tourists in Thailand, but it also has a deeper cultural significance. The Thai people believe that the ocean is a sacred place and that there are spirits that reside in it. Our final destination is Mexico! In Mexico, the ocean is seen as a symbol of life and death. They believe that the ocean is where you go after you die, and it’s also where new life begins. This is why the Day of the Dead celebration in Mexico involves offerings to the spirits of loved ones who have passed away, and many of these offerings are made in or near the ocean. As divers, we can appreciate the ocean as a symbol of both life and death and use it as a reminder to live life to the fullest.
