The Different Types of Scuba Diving Certifications Available

So you’re ready to take the plunge and become a certified scuba diver! Congrats, you’re officially cooler than your land-dwelling friends. But before you can start exploring the depths of the ocean, you need to get certified. There are a few different types of scuba diving certifications available, so let’s break them down.

Open Water Diver

The Open Water Diver certification is arguably the most popular scuba diving certification. This certification will allow you to dive up to 18 meters (60 feet) deep and is recognized around the world.

You’ll first complete some classroom work and a written exam to learn the basics of scuba diving. Then, you’ll spend time in a pool or shallow water learning scuba skills like how to breathe underwater and how to use your equipment. Finally, you’ll complete four open water dives with an instructor to demonstrate your abilities.

Advanced Open Water Diver

If you’re looking to take your scuba diving skills to the next level, consider getting your Advanced Open Water Diver certification. This certification allows you to dive up to 30 meters (100 feet) deep and is a great way to gain experience and confidence underwater.

In addition to completing five dives (two of which are mandatory), you’ll also have the opportunity to choose three additional “elective” dives such as night diving, underwater photography, or wreck diving.

Rescue Diver

If you’re looking to become a safer and more responsible scuba diver, the Rescue Diver certification may be for you. This certification will teach you how to prevent and manage underwater emergencies.

You’ll complete a series of theory and practical sessions where you’ll learn how to handle common issues like equipment malfunctions, panicked divers, and missing divers. This certification is a great way to gain confidence and knowledge in diving safety.

Dive Master

If you’re looking to take your scuba diving to a professional level, the Dive Master certification is the starting point. With this certification, you’ll be able to lead and supervise dives, as well as assist instructors with courses.

You’ll need to have a significant amount of scuba diving experience (at least 40 dives) and complete a series of theoretical and practical sessions. After becoming a Dive Master, you can continue on to become a scuba diving instructor!
